Why is It Called Black Friday?

Many of you will have undoubtedly heard of Black Friday, but most don’t actually know the meaning behind the term.

The term used to have negative connotations because it refers to the day after Thanksgiving when workers would call in sick, resulting in a 4-day workweek.

In 1975, the New York Times used the phrase to describe Black Friday as the “busiest shopping and traffic day of the year”. Since then, merchants and shopkeepers started using Black Friday in a positive manner, referring to the day of the year which brings them “out of the red, putting them in the black” – referring to the accounting term that used black ink to show positive amounts, and red ink to show deficits.

Controversies Behind Black Friday

There’s been a fair bit of controversy behind Black Fridays throughout the years. Retailers that open for business at 9am started opening their doors at 6am during Black Friday to take advantage of the frenzied shoppers.

When the retailers realized that even at 6am, people were still lining up to go shopping, they decided to start opening at 5am, and since people just decided to stand in line earlier, the merchants started opening at 4am.

In 2011, probably in a move to outdo each other in a pissing contest, many popular merchants including the likes of Target, Kohls, Macy’s, Best Buy, and Bealls opened their doors for the first time at midnight, causing the crowd to go even wilder.

This went on and on until stores stated that they will start their sales as early as 5 pm on Thanksgiving day, obviously upsetting the people who had to work during the holiday.

There have even been cases of rioting, stampeding and people hurting each other during Black Friday. So far, there’s been 49 Black Friday related incidents which resulted in 14 deaths and 117 injuries.

Why Do People Go Crazy During Black Friday?

The answer is simple – it’s all in the deals.

Black Friday is the only time in the year that retailers slash their prices super low in order to meet customer expectations, and people go nuts fighting each other just for a chance to purchase their favourite products at rock bottom prices.

Thankfully with the rise of e-Commerce, as many as 68% of shoppers will be shifting their shopping habits online for Black Friday, although that brings about its fair share of problems, like retailer’s websites not loading due to high traffic, and items being lost in the mail.

When is Black Friday?

If you’re keen on getting the best deals on products for yourself, family and friends, you’ll want to know when Black Friday is.

It typically falls on the day after Thanksgiving. For this year 2024, Black Friday will be on November 29th 2024. Following that will be Cyber Monday on December 2nd 2024, which is the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

Cyber Monday 101 – All You Need to Know!

Cyber Monday was created during 2005 in an effort to get more people to shop online. It’s typically on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

It quickly became one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, rivalling Black Friday in terms of sales. As a matter of fact, in 2020 Cyber Monday shoppers spent a whopping $10.84 billion in online sales, surpassing Black Friday sales which came in at $9.03 billion.

Adobe has even released their forecast which predicts an insanely high $143 billion in online sales for 2020.

Online sales from Black Friday usually last all the way till Cyber Monday, giving shoppers 3 glorious days of shopping for fantastic offers.

There are many advantages to shopping online, and that’s why shoppers are leaving brick and mortar stores for the convenience of the world wide web.

You can avoid other frenzied customers in the mall. Why fight with others when you can easily purchase items online?

You can also easily read reviews from other buyers so you’ll know if the item you’ve got your eye on is worth purchasing or not.

Things to Keep in Mind While Shopping Online

We know that people enjoy savings (who doesn’t like a good deal?) and that’s the reason why people WANT to get their items, by hook or by crook come Cyber Monday, but there are certain drawbacks to shopping online which you’ll want to take note of to avoid disappointments.

  • Websites can’t handle the traffic Very much like brick and mortar outlets, shoppers will be flocking to their favourite sites come Cyber Monday to look for deals, and the site may very well be poorly equipped to handle the sudden influx of traffic. You might face complications trying to get the store to load which can be quite frustrating.
  • Limited stock If you’re looking to purchase physical products, keep in mind that these stores have limited stock, and you’ll be fighting with tons of other online shoppers to get the stuff you need. You’ll have to be quick to purchase, or someone else might get the last available unit.
  • Delayed deliveries The website you’re shopping at may not have enough manpower to help deal with deliveries, and the sudden influx of shoppers during Cyber Monday is way too unpredictable. The packing and delivering of products are handled by people, and people do make mistakes, especially when overwhelmed during situations like these. Expect slow deliveries or worse, deliveries that never arrive.

Where to Find the Best Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2024 Deals?

If you’re looking for physical products, you can’t go wrong with Amazon. As THE largest online retailer in the United States, they’re bound to have deals that are irresistible.

For those of you small business owners looking for web hosting deals, cloud storage, VPN or even printers, things can get pretty overwhelming as all the companies start slashing their prices.

However, we’ve compiled a few lists of our favorite deals for each category for your convenience.

Things to Take Note Before Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping

  • Have you done your research? It’s best to know what sort of product you’re looking for before the promotions hit, so when the deals drop, you can get right to shopping. Go find out what you want, so you can keep your eye on discounts for it!
  • Have you checked the reviews? You might be thinking of switching web hosting providers, or eyeing that VPN just waiting for the prices to drop. But how do you know if the service providers you want can really provide you with the service you need? Lucky for you guys, we’ve done all that work for you. Check out our list of best web hosting providers and best VPN providers and see if their services are the right fit for you.
  • Be decisive! Black Friday typically lasts only for one day on November 29th 2024. For digital products, the promos MIGHT spill over till Cyber Monday (December 2nd 2024). However, there are no guarantees if the promos will last that long. So, if you see something you like, and the reviews are good, quit procrastinating and buy it already, or you’ll have to risk waiting a whole year to enjoy similar savings!
