I have been with this company for quite some time now and they randomly drop my e-mails quite often. They are always very friendly when I call and say “sorry, here you are” and release them. They never have an explanation and therefore no hope of making it better. (source)
Dot5Hosting.com is still an industry top provider, although was recently acquired by EIG. Their affordable packages, cheap domains are one of the reasons that Dot 5 Hosting has become one of the most popular web hosting packages in the past.
here’s some science y’all…. montools.com shows 51 minutes downtime on dot5hosting—for the entire year of 2011! All these negative complaints about down time are unjustified. Tech support web chat response time was about a minute or so a few days ago. I’ve been with them a few years (4 domains, just added another last week) and I am fine with their service, admin features, performance, pricing. Like another reviewer said, maybe dot5hosting works just fine if you know what you’re doing. (source)
They automatically renewed my account after it had been closed for a year. I chatted online with a support person who refused any help but kept saying “The domain name cannot be refunded, however we can cancel the account so that you will not be renewed in future”.
Dot5 might not have as well known of a name as some other web hosting companies, but they have been around for quite some time and have earned a good reputation. While it’s not the cheapest shared hosting plan available, it could be the right plan for you, as a small business owner or personal blogger.
This web hosting service has been around since 2002. Shortly after its inception, Dot5 quickly became the choice of many resellers and techies. Back then, there weren’t as many choices when it came to finding a host for your website. Dot5 rested on its laurels for quite some time, until new companies began to emerge and take over the market. In recent years, Dot5 has begun to institute feature changes in order to better compete. This may be a result of the brand being acquired by giant parent company Endurance International Group.
Let’s start with what features they offer. There used to be limits on the amount of storage space and bandwidth provided by their shared hosting package but those are both unlimited now (although they are actually limited to the parameters of “normal operation” according to their TOS). In addition, MySQL databases, FTP accounts, domains (including subdomains and parked domains) and emails are all unlimited. You also get a free domain name when you sign up. That’s pretty standard for most hosting services today.
What’s different about Dot5? Well, for one thing, they support international domains. That’s not always so easy to find. Upon purchasing a shared hosting plan, they will set up your website for free; they also offer simple, online editing and publishing programs. Even for beginners, it’s easy to add a calendar, bulletin board, online chat option and photo gallery through the management panel.
If you are beyond a newbie as far as website development and management, you will be pleased to find that Dot5 allows customizable error pages, custom Cronjobs, override .htaccess support and add-on MIME types. If you are used to dealing with cPanel for file and website management, however, be aware that Dot5 provides vDeck instead.
Dot5 only offers shared hosting. The initial cost is $5.95 per month with a two-year contract, or $6.95 monthly if you only want to commit to a single year of hosting service. This isn’t a bad price, but it certainly isn’t the cheapest available and Dot5, perhaps more than other companies, seems to raise the non-promotional price annually. If you wish to complain about the price increase, they will let you switch to another hosting service without much of a fight.
One of the tenets upon which Dot5 was founded is their ability to provide high-quality technical support. Responses to technical problems are usually pretty quick, within a couple hours at most and resolution doesn’t normally take longer than a full business day. They offer 24/7 support via online ticket or chat, including telephone support (which is somewhat rare).
Dot5 seems to be most focused on providing good technical support so if that is a main concern of yours, this might be a great choice. However, there is little to distinguish Dot5 from other hosting services and with a price that is up to 150 percent more than others, it’s hard to justify paying more for similar, if not identical, features for example iPage or Inmotion Hosting
